Something for Men to Ponder - For Week of March 8:
Psalm 73:25-28
25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.
27 Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
28 But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge;
I will tell of all your deeds.
Perspective Amidst Life’s Storms
Ever question if it’s really worth it to follow God? You’re not alone, brother. Even the men of the Bible had moments of doubt regardless of the strength of their faith. Asaph, the author of Psalm 73, was right where you are today. Asaph was tempted to give up his faith as he asked God, “Why do evil men prosper all around me while I’m suffering?”
After God reminded him of the eventual fate of the wicked, Asaph concluded that the key to keeping his perspective amid life’s storms was to be reminded that God is in control and God is good. Centering your thoughts on God’s incredible goodness, when you feel tempted to give up, will guard you against the enemy’s attacks.
Think of yourself as a train with three sections: engine, freight car and caboose. Your will is the engine…it drives you. Your intellect is your freight car…it carries the heavy loads. And your emotions are the caboose…it is supposed to follow (not lead). It is important not to be driven by our caboose (i.e. emotions) in difficult times like these. Whatever you’re facing (loss of a job, financial difficulties, etc.), keep your eyes on the goodness of God as found in His Word.
Asaph “cleaved” to God in his despair. Cleave means to stick firmly, closely, loyally and unwaveringly. When we cleave to God, the world and all its glory vanishes. Psalm 73:26 says, “…my heart and my flesh may fail, but God is the strength of my life and my portion forever.
God reminds us that He is the source of our true strength and our ultimate Provider forever. Keep a journal where you can write down things that you’re grateful for and lessons you’re learning in God’s Word. Let those reminders strengthen you no matter what you may be facing today. Stay in His Word, in prayer and surrounded by other men of faith. God is good, brother. Remember that yourself and encourage a brother with that reminder.
